Steve Ward's history of Bishop Sutton Village School is a remarkable book. A huge amount of research went into compiling this most detailed of records which includes an amazing archive of photographs of the school and the village. Villagers' stories and contemporary records guide the reader through the twists and turns of learning and teaching, snow, war and smelly toilets and provide the reader with a wry insight into nearly 200 years of village life, work and play.

The curious title is how a farmer's wife scolded a headmaster for teaching her son arithmetic.
