This Clown dates back to 2002 and was photographed by Pete Maginnis on Hotwell Road. It's actually quite a small stencil, but its impact is big. Although the Clown isn't a recurring theme in Banksy's work, he does seem to have a fascination with Ronald MacDonald. It also probably refers back to Banksy's roots on the festival/travellers' circuit. This image is an obvious juxtaposition of humour and sinister, a theme that Banksy was to develop into his hugely ambitious Weston-super-Mare project at Dismaland.
