This CD features 11 stories in a series of childhood recollections written and narrated by Jonathan Evans who grew up in the Nottinghamshire pit village Kirkby in Ashfield in the 1950s and 60s.
As well as unravelling The Mystery Of Ernie Taylor’s Abdomen, Jonathan tells of weird and wonderful dreams that somehow, marvellously, come true. There are stories of betrayal involving love hearts, tales of revenge and curious insights into why Jonathan never eats sandwiches. He also relates the epic tale of DH Lawrence, The Lion Tamer And The Doctor’s Wife, a story which up until now very few people have been aware of – which is probably no bad thing. Throughout the book there is an affection for Jonathan’s hometown. As he says “Sure things were never perfect but, in some respects, it was paradise with an adventure around every street corner.”
The stories are full of childhood confusion, discovery, disappointment, adventure, humour and pathos all set against the working-class backdrop of a pit village seen through the eyes of a Nottingham Forest-mad young lad.
